Char Siu Turkey Hindquarter Recipe with Green Salad and Rice

Once again we took advantage of the very cheap turkey hindquarters that are currently overflowing from the freezers at our local supermarket. They are now flogging them off for AU$6.27 for a 2kg hindquarter. Today we cooked it up Chinese-style. It was so simple that it’s not really a recipe, more just a concept. However, it does taste great and you’ll have leftovers for future lunches.

Roast Lemon and Sage Turkey Hindquarter Recipe with Trimmings

Usually if you go to the supermarket freezer, you’ll find packs of two whole turkey breasts (still mounted on the carcass) for around $36. Right next to them you’ll find turkey hindquarters for around $6 to $7. Although the hindquarter is not endowed with visually appealing white meat, if cooked correctly it is juicy, tender and very flavoursome. Don’t just wait for Christmas – eat this wonderful meat all year round! A 1.5 to 2kg hindquarter should feed about 4 people.

Creamy European-style Turkey and Vegetable Curry

We bought some turkey the other day at the supermarket for a reduced price – only $6 for two very large and meaty drumsticks. After boning them out, we decided to make this deliciously mild, European-style curry. If you don’t want to use turkey you could certainly supplement this with other poultry, such as chicken. You could even use pork. The fact we didn’t have any coconut cream in the pantry inspired us to make this a European-style curry (hence the inclusion of apple, celery and carrot). The cream was actually a refreshing change from our norm, and it seemed to enhance the flavour of the spices, lending the dish a richness and complexity that was really enjoyable.
