We are a young couple who live in the hilly outskirts of Perth. The area is defined by its beautiful eucalypt bushland, crisp clean air, and lovely clear rainwater (with a major Weir one of the main attractions). The soil is a sign you’re getting closer to ‘red dirt country’, with lots of red gravel. In our garden the soil is part gravelly sand, and part decomposed eucalypt forest floor. The climate is slightly cooler than Perth, being somewhat higher in altitude. Compared to other areas located a similar distance from Perth, our suburb does not yet suffer from high-density living. Being surrounded by bushland and with a large national park nearby, the only real downside to life in the hills is the summer bushfire risk. Overall, it’s a pretty relaxing place to live. We feel lucky to have the opportunity to currently live here.
In a world dominated by fast food outlets on the one hand, and over-priced gourmet alternatives on the other, we enjoy writing about the food we make and sharing recipes that we think are keepers. We also write about music, gardening, self-sustainability, art, politics, homebrewing and ubuntu linux. Make sure to check out our archive to see some of our older stuff.
Our dream is to one day own a small plot where we can live simply, grow our own food, and raise some chooks, ducks, goats, sheep and a pig. In the meantime, we live very simply on a small income, buy secondhand, make a lot of our own stuff, and spend our free time reading, listening to music, gardening creating music and art, and contributing to online community forums.
If you read something on here that you don’t understand or want more info on, please know that no question is too big or small – we are happy to try our best at answering it! It’s always really awesome to hear that people are reading our stuff and to know that there are likeminded people out there, so please don’t be shy!
Our name is inspired by the German children’s book Joba und das Wildschwein (Joba and the Wild Boar).
